Bigger continued to be better, with a breakthrough in tyre technology boosting big trucks, but throughout, as John Chadwick notes, the machines required more power and more productivity.
Consolidation among the suppliers continued in 1998. Terex added O&K to Unit Rig to form Terex Mining, Komatsu Mining Systems (KMS) purchased Demag, Hitachi took a firmer grip on Euclid, as Volvo departed, and P&H Mine Pro added more products to its portfolio.
The pressure to cut mining costs has driven many producers to maximise the overall scale of operations and to use the latest and largest available and applicable excavating loading and haulage equipment. However, the weak mining product markets of the past year or so have mitigated against this by driving down the investment capital available for new equipment. Nevertheless, manufacturers continue to develop better and bigger machines with, for example, the 3001 truck capacity barrier well and truly broken last year.
